prescription drugs Coloradans take part in nationwide disposal of prescription drugsThis past weekend marked the first-ever prescription drug “Take Back” campaign. With prescription drug abuse as one of Colorado’s fastest growing problems, the event is an attempt by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and local law enforcement to provide a safe place to properly dispose of prescription medicine.

The main focus is controlled substances such as prescription painkillers including Vicodin, Oxycontin and Percocet. Controlled substances like prescription painkillers need to be dropped off to certified law enforcement officials rather than returned to pharmacies.  Drop off sites have been set up across Colorado for safe disposal of these drugs.

Denver criminal attorneys applaud the move and discourage consumers from simply throwing their old prescription in the trash where they can fall into the wrong hands, or flushing them down the drain where they can introduce harmful chemicals into the water supply. The success of the take-back program  will likely determine the frequency of future events.
