Hi, I am Colin McCallin with the Hebets & McCallin video blog. Today we are going to be talking about that basic question: Do I need an attorney? Well in any criminal case the answer depends, and I probably can't answer it for everybody out there, but here are some basic things you should know about whether or not you should hire an attorney for a criminal case.
First of all, even if we are only talking about a petty offense or misdemeanor you should nknow the answer to some very basic questions. If I enter a plea how is this going to effect my permanent criminal record? Am I exposed to any jail time? Is the prosecution going to be asking for anything I don't know about? Bottom line—if you don't know the answers to these questions at a minimum you should set up a consultation with a lawyer who is seasoned with criminal law. The answer of whether or not to hire a lawyer is inevitably going to be left up to the client, but it is important to do research and make sure that all of those questions are answered before taking any type of substantive step in the criminal law process. There are a lot of pitfalls that people may fall into—don't let that happen to you. If you ever have any questions concerning a criminal matter give us a call.
