DRE (Drug Recognition Expert)
In order for an officer to be certified as a DRE (Drug Recognition Expert) they must undergo a lengthy certification process. This process is a NHTSA standardized 12 step evaluation involving physical and mental evaluations whose goal is to attempt to determine which drugs an individual may or may not be under the influence of.
The extremely specialized nature of this testing demands that an officer conducting these examinations be precise in their testing methods as well as their reporting procedures. DUID cases are often won or lost based on an expert defense attorney's cross-examination of these witnesses.
