Harassment
Harassment is a very common misdemeanor charge that can result from a variety of different behavior. It is quite commonly associated with domestic violence cases. To provide a few examples, a person can be charged with harassment if, coupled with the intent to annoy or alarm another person, they touch that person without the other's consent; they call or email that person using obscene language; or they follow them in a public place.
The point is that “harassment” can be very broad, and often it is a charge without any substance or merit. Nonetheless, it can be serious; individuals convicted of harassment are often required to complete 36 weeks of domestic violence classes and can be sentenced to a six month jail sentence.
