How to Choose a Criminal Defense Attorney

My name is Russell Hebets and today we are going to be talking about what to look for when you are hiring a criminal defense attorney? There are three main areas that we are going to look it. Things you want to look for or avoid when making that decision.

The first is beware of promises. If you go in and have a consultation with an attorney and after you are done telling him or her what happened with your case and they sit there and tell you, "Don't you worry about a thing." Your case is going to be absolutely dismissed at the first court appearance. That is an attorney or lawyer telling you what you want to hear. Because at that they have no idea what the prosecution's case is built on. If you have been charged with a crime somebody has already found probable cause that the crime has been committed. That does not mean it won't eventually get dismissed, but that does mean that if an attorney is telling you that at your initial consultation---beware.

The second big area is beware of partners or senior attorneys. If you go in and meet with someone who is a partner or senior attorney at a law firm you need to make absolutely sure that they are going to be the ones handling your case. All too often you meet with someone who has the knowledge, who has the experience, who is ample in their legal ability to defend your case, but when you go to court it is a brand new associate who doesn’t know what they are doing. Be sure the attorney you meet with is going to be your attorney.

The third area is expertise. You want to make sure that whatever lawyer you ultimately hire has experience in similar kinds of cases to whatever you are charged with. Sometimes you will attorneys who handle DUIs, criminal law, family, bankruptcies, and child custody. The more thinly they are spread the less their expertise is, so you need to make sure that they have experience handling the types of cases that you are facing. Also, make sure that they have experience in the jurisdiction in which you are charged.

If you follow these three steps in trying to determine who you are going to hire to defend you, you will not go wrong.
