TIPS FOR AVOIDING A DUI
If you are going out to an event where alcohol is available it is essential to have a plan prior to drinking. If you plan ahead and stick to that plan you can greatly reduce or eliminate the possibility of being charged with Driving Under the Influence.
- Don't drink. Abstaining from alcohol is the only foolproof way to prevent yourself from picking up a DUI. This may be difficult for you, but if you can avoid alcohol entirely, you almost completely eliminate the risk of being stopped and charged with DUI. Decide at the beginning of the night that you are not going to drink alcohol, tell your friends at the beginning of the night that you’re not drinking, and always have a non-alcoholic beverage in your hand to reduce any temptation to consume alcohol.
- Maintain your sobriety throughout the night. If you want to enjoy alcohol during the evening simply be very aware of what you’re drinking and limit how much you consume. This includes monitoring the amount of alcohol in each drink. If you are having cocktails, pay close attention as the bartender mixes your drink so that you know how strong it is prior to drinking it. Having a drink or two during the night is generally fine so long as you wait 1-2 hours after your last drink before operating a motor vehicle. If you are stopped and charged in Colorado after only one or two drinks over the course of hours, any test results should provide you with a very strong defense if you are charged with DUI.
- Walk don’t drive. If you live close enough to the bar or party to walk, then walk! If you don’t have your car with you, there will be no temptation to get into your vehicle after drinking too much. This has the extra benefit of letting you work off some of the calories that you just drank!
- Call someone for a ride. If you find yourself away from home and intoxicated, call a cab. Although you’ll have to pay money that you weren’t planning on, we can guarantee you that paying $20, $50, $100 for a cab is much, much cheaper than paying for all the costs associated with a DUI. If you can’t get a cab, call a friend or a family member. Ask him or her to pick you up and drive you home. This may be an inconvenience for them, but they should understand that an inconvenience for them is better than a DUI for you.
