After being charged with his second DUI resulting from a November traffic stop, Denver Broncos linebacker Genos “DJ” Williams has waived his arraignment Monday. Top Denver DUI lawyers indicate that by waiving the arraignment, the former defensive co-captain avoids having to appear in court on Monday, but a trial date is expected sometime in January.
This is Williams’ second DUI charge. He previously pleaded guilty in September 2005 to driving drunk and was ordered to perform 24 hours of community service. Williams is in his seventh season with the Broncos and is the second-highest-paid player on the team and with a salary of $8.6 million a year. The team stripped Williams of his team captaincy as a result of the recent DUI incident.
In an attempt to improve the league’s image, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been cracking down on player misconduct since taking office. Other NFL players have received multiple game suspensions for multiple DUI arrests and A conviction isn’t required for Goodell to suspend a player without pay.
